The NewsWith so much proverbial emphasis placed on interiors (i.e. "…it's what's inside that counts"), couture was destined to head indoors. Behind the NewsPerennially one of the most recognized fashion houses in the world, Versace continues to expand its reach. First it delved into helicopter cockpit design and now it is setting its sights on a historic Manhattan building.
Famed for its clock tower, the former MetLife building at 5 Madison Avenue (aka 1 Madison Avenue) is about to get a haute revamp. Its owner, Africa Israel Investments Ltd., has announced a partnership with Versace which will see the 100 year old building extensively revamped, at least internally. According to a press release, Versace will conceptualize and oversee the development of fifty-five residential apartments, a new restaurant, a spa, and several common areas. Furthermore, as Versace delves deeper into the interior design realm, the Clock Tower project is notable in that it - specifically its planned two-storey restaurant - will be the first space to bare the branding, "designed by Donatella Vesace." Next year marks the historic building's centenary, with the project celebrating the anniversary in style. Originally built in 1909, the Madison Avenue building was briefly the tallest building in the world. This new affiliation with Versace reforms an Italian connection that began with the building's inspiration: Campanila di San Marco in Venice. Though specific aesthetic details are forthcoming, both AI and Versace promise a unique look that befits Versace's reputation for restrained yet marked elegance. Comments
