Located near the Picasso Museum, this nice little bar offers a wonderful and eclectic menu of mixed-drinks. And if you need a little something to soak up the alcohol in your stomach, they offer a fantastic array of tapas, like anchovies soaked in vinegar. This popular nightspot is renowned for their Zampanyet champagne, so leaving without tasting it is absolutely ludicrous. Operated by the same family since the 1930s, El Xampanyet is adorned with colored tiles, marble tables, an old-fashioned zinc bar, and the appropriate barrels. The ideal way to experience El Xampanyet is as a prelude to the Picasso Museum. Suddenly all of his paintings will seem like prime examples of photorealism. Don't go in August, they're closed. -N.E.
