When in Spain, a stop off at a tapas bar is not only required, but inevitable; so why not go to the best. Go with Cal Pep. The dishes change every season, but consistency remains in the selection of wines, the friendliness of the staff, and the overall liveliness of the restaurant. Be forewarned, this spot is well liked by both locals and tourists, so it will be quite busy. Show up early or make a reservation unless you want to be shunned at the door (and shunning is really not all that’s its cracked up to be). There’s also a related fish restaurant next door. It’s good, but not a required stop like this fantastic tapas bar. The place has been around for 25 years, and still manages to be packed, so you know they are doing something right. -N.E.
