Like Irish pubs and Coca Cola, French bistros have proliferated to the point of global colonization. In every major city, suburb, small town, or mall food court - strike that last one - you can find some sort of tablecloth and horizontal-stripe homage to the blonde, bleu, et rouge. However, Melbourne's Vue de Monde should by no means be lumped in with the typical French brasserie. It's in a class onto itself (and not just because of its price category).
Luxury permeates the confines. From the well-attired staff and the room's modern-chic design to the quality of the fare and drink card, everything at VdM (does that sound dirty?) is high-end. The dinner menu (there's a cheaper lunch alternative that changes daily) continuously evolves, but you can always expect intriguingly innovative dishes that incorporate the best ingredients.
Calling the food presentation art plates is an understatement. Anyone can stack food and scatter sauce, but Vue de Monde takes it to a new level. You'll want to surreptitiously snap shots of your dinner, have prints blown-up and professionally framed, and hung above the fireplace in your living room. That's how pretty these creations are. However, you're here to eat - i.e. you can't have your proverbial cake, etc. - so you eventually have to desecrate your dinner with a fork.
The standard menu is 5 courses, but the $250 Gastronomes Menu will leave you sublimely full and titillated. Try not to eat for a week or so after your trip to Vue de Monde, as the resto will spoil you maddeningly. No, Vue de Monde isn't cheap, but you're on vacation so you can splurge. Make a reservation now as they're hard to come by.
